The average American wedding now runs about $34,000, and the median is closer to $18,000 — which tells you two things. First, big weddings pull the average way up. Second, whatever your number is, someone has thrown a great wedding for half of it. The budget isn't a scorecard. It's a set of tradeoffs you get to choose on purpose, if — and only if — you can see the whole board.
Where the money actually goes
Percentages beat dollar figures, because they scale to your number. Here's the typical allocation for a full reception wedding, drawn from industry averages and rounded to reality:

Two structural facts hide in that table. Per-guest costs — catering, bar, rentals, stationery — are roughly half your budget, which means the guest list is the biggest budget lever you own. Cutting ten guests saves real money; switching centerpiece vendors saves a rounding error. And the buffer is a line item, not a hope. Weddings run 10–15% over plan on average; a named buffer means overruns come out of a plan instead of a panic.
Every line item needs three numbers
Here is where nearly every wedding budget quietly dies: it's a single column labeled "cost." A useful budget carries three numbers per line, and they mean different things.
- Planned — what you allocated when the budget was drawn. This number never changes; it's the baseline you measure drift against.
- Actual — what the thing really costs, per the signed quote or contract. The gap between planned and actual, summed across lines, is your drift.
- Paid — what's actually left your account, payment by payment. The gap between actual and paid is your outstanding commitment: money that's spoken for but still looks reassuringly present in the checking account.
That third number is the sneaky one. Wedding vendors bill in installments — deposit at booking, balance at 30 or 14 days out — so a couple can be fully committed to $31,000 while having spent only $12,000. The month before the wedding, the remaining $19,000 comes due more or less at once. If you're tracking "paid" as if it were "spent," that month is a very bad surprise. If you're tracking all three numbers, it's a calendar entry.
The committed-spend check
Once each line has its three numbers, one derived figure tells you where you stand: committed spend as a percentage of budget — the sum of all actuals (signed quotes) divided by total budget. Check it at every vendor signing:
- Under 80% with major vendors still unsigned: healthy.
- 90%+ with the florist, transport, and favors still open: the remaining categories are living on your buffer.
- Over 100%: not a failure, a decision point. Cut a category, trim the list, or consciously raise the number — but do it on paper, not by drift.
Payment schedules are budget data too
A budget that tracks what things cost but not when they're due is half a budget. For every vendor, log each installment: amount, due date, paid or not. This turns the terrifying final month into a checklist, catches the double-charged deposit (it happens), and — pleasantly — shows you which vendors are fully settled so you can stop thinking about them entirely.
